More schools in Cornwall will have solar panels as officials in the sunniest county in the UK aim to make education more environmentally friendly.

Schools will be able to take out a low-interest loan to buy “photovoltaic” equipment to convert sunlight into electricity.

Around #163;1.4 million will be available, at first to 20 per cent of all schools. All local authorities need to reduce their carbon footprints or face financial penalties and by 2011 Cornwall Council will be measured on its performance.

The money for the solar panels has been given to the area as part of the Low Carbon Building Programme.

It is thought they will produce around 9,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per annum. This will save four tonnes of carbon and #163;850 on the purchase of electricity at current prices.

Schools involved will also receive #163;800 of income each year, earning money for every bit of electricity they produce. KM.
