A total of 560 billion francs (Pounds 80 billion), 2 per cent more than in 1994, was spent on the education system. The figure represents an average of Pounds 1,280 for each man, woman and child and 7.3 per cent of GDP. Pupils and students cost on average Pounds 4,450 a year each to educate, with an average nursery-school child costing Pounds 2,800 and a university student Pounds 5,950.
National government pays most, contributing 65 per cent of finance, followed by regional and local authorities (20 per cent). Education accounts for over a fifth of the government’s budget.
