Primary schools throughout the country are being asked by The TES Scotland to join in a project chronicling the use of the Scots language at the end of the 20th century.
The hope is that every education authority will encourage its schools to become involved. Dictionaries created by pupils in each school would be used to compile and publish a single national edition in time for the millennium.
The concept originated at Dunblane primary where primary 5 teacher Elaine Wylie found her pupils, parents, grandparents and the local community eager to compile a record of Scots words used and definitions of them.
The first stage would be to publish a dictionary locally, for distribution and sale within the community. The next crucial stage would be to put it on a computer disc, if at all possible PC or Mac, and send it, along with a printout and illustrated school version, to The TES Scotland by March 30.
