* Initial teacher training and continuing professional development (CPD) need to change in response to reforms of the 14-19 curriculum, according to Susan Lewis, Wales’s chief inspector. Young people are to be given more personal learning support and a wider range of vocational and academic options as part of the 14-19 changes.
At a conference in Cardiff this week, Ms Lewis said consideration should be given to training teachers for the 14-19 age range, rather than for 11-16 or 11-18.
She added: “Most attention in teacher-training courses is given to communication, application of number, and information and communications technology, and far less on problem-solving and working with others. CPD will need to focus more on how to develop, monitor and assess young people’s key skills.
“We need teachers highly trained in skills development and supporting and managing learning.”
