Pupils are spending their days “sighing in dismay” due to a lack of creativity in schools, a former top civil servant said this week. Speaking at the 2010 North of England Education Conference in York, Sir Michael Bichard, a former permanent secretary at the Department of Education, said schools have become too “dour”. Sir Michael added that art, music, dance and drama have become “add-ons”.
