The Scottish Cricket Union has announced a substantial boost for the schools game. The Stanley Morrison Charitable Trust is to increase its annual sponsorship of primary schools and youth cricket from pound;8,000 to pound;11,000 for the next five years, so impressed is it with the results achieved in the previous five years of its sponsorship.

The money supports both introductory work done on the game in primary schools and the Under-15 Inter District festival. Fifty schools have participated in the primary school programme in th past five years and 35 of those are still actively playing cricket.

The SCU also points out that youngsters who have played in the under-15 festivals have gone on to represent Scotland at under-15 and under-17 level.

“I’m delighted the partnership will continue for the next five years,” said Iain Kennedy, SportScotland cricket co-ordinator. “It will ensure that countless youngsters will get the opportunity to have a go at cricket and without doubt some of the stars of the future will come to the fore.”
