Sitting in rural France, I still read Mike Kent (Comment, p32) and admire him for plainly saying what all of us are thinking. My three recommendations to Ed Balls and Michael Gove (which, in proper modern edu- speak style, are bullet-pointed) are:

- Employ Mike Kent as your chief adviser
