WAR has broken out on the TES website over the vexed question of what football fans should do about the clash between the second half of the England-Nigeria game on Wednesday and the first period in most schools. A young teacher who suggested a sickie sparked outraged condemnation.

While some then rallied to his defence, others suggested integrating the game into lessons. An English class could perhaps marvel at the richness of Ron Atkinson’s use of the language (“I never comment on referees and I’m not going to break the habit of a lifetime for that prat.”) Our favourite contributor tried to find a compromise between pro and anti sickie factions. “Eat some out-of-date prawns the night before the game and then you really will be sick. Problem solved.”
