The Diary is sad to report the third closure in three years of the tiny primary school on the Shetland island of Papa Stour. Jane Walker, the mother of its only two pupils, withdrew her children after falling out with Simon Calvin, their teacher. She was furious when she discovered he had given a statement to police after her husband had emptied a bucket of dog-poo over the local minister. Mr Walker was subsequently fined pound;600 at Lerwick sheriff court, having pleaded guilty to the assault.
Mr Calvin is being redeployed elsewhere in Shetland. The Walker children are being educated at home.
