As green as a churchyard
Thousands of churches are expected to take part in Cherishing Churchyards Week in June. The event aims to raise awareness of the historical and natural importance of churchyards through events, including tours, workshops, guided walks, storytelling and plant identification.
This year there is a special focus on the plant life found in churchyards, as part of the UN’s International Year of Biodiversity.
The event takes place from June 28 and is being run by the conservation charity Caring for God’s Acre, supported by the Church of England’s national environmental campaign, Shrinking the Footprint. About half the Church of England’s 12,000 churchyards already run biodiversity projects.
