The Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage

(Introduced in 2000. 130 pages). It sets out a play-based curriculum for children aged three to five. Children take defined steps (such as joining in with number rhymes and songs) to 13 early learning goals (eg counting to 10) in six areas: communication, language and literacy; maths; personal, social and emotional development; knowledge and understanding of the world; physical development; and creative development. At five, children are assessed on a nine-point scale for each goal. This assessment is called a foundation stage profile.
