SALTERS HORNERS A2 ADVANCED PHYSICS. Student book pound;20.99. Teacher and Technician Resource pack Heinemann pound;77.99

For students in the second year of the Salters course, the textbook covers units four and five of context-led study (Moving with physics and Physics from Creation to Collapse), with a short section on maths. The layout and examples give the book a very contemporary feel, particularly important for relevance and credibility when covering subject areas such as astrophysics which advance rapidly.

The teacher and technician pack is rather hefty and certainly comprehensive. Copious photocopiable activity sheets and unit tests are available. Equipment limitations will mean that many activities may have to be demonstrations or carried out as part of a circus, for example, some relying on modelling software such as Crocodile Clips or those requiring internet access. There is a good range of suggestions for practical work and there will definitely be activities to suit most teaching and learning styles. The most useful features are the teacher’s notes, with “top tips” and practical advice; such as having a departmental elder on hand to suggest which bits of a video can be fast-forwarded over, or the best way to divide up the teaching with another colleague. Essential if you have gone down the Salters route, but an extravagance if you follow a more traditional advanced level course.
