It was good to see Tom Dair back in action in Fife last week. The former regional education chairman, who became a victim of the march of the districts (otherwise known as local government reform), sits apparently comfortably on the back benches. His role is that of unofficial historian, reminding later arrivals on the scene how things used to be.
Dair’s main beef last week was the use of schools as polling stations. He cited Hill of Beath primary in Cowdenbeath, where the kids are given the day off, while the community centre across the road is open for normal business.
Dair reckoned the Pounds 82 fee was a pretty poor bargain. Not in Benarty, he was told by veteran Communist councillor Willie Clarke. There, the community centre takes the cash.
