Dance and drama students from west London proved they really are world class by winning a place in an international dance final in Hollywood.

Scenario, a six-girl troupe, swept aside all competition to represent the UK in the fourth annual World Hip-Hop Dance Championship this week. They face competition from the best dancers from 25 nations.

The six girls jetted off to Los Angeles on Wednesday. Their place in the finals is a reward for constant hard practice at the local youth centre and in front of music television shows, said Fagee Lisk, a Btec national diploma student in drama at Uxbridge College, the one who formed the troupe.

The girls spent hours collecting door-to-door and approaching businesses and airlines to raise the pound;9,000 needed for the trip. In addition, backing came from Brent local authority and a grant from a police urban support fund.

“It is going to be really, really competitive and I am really excited. Even if we don’t win it’s a great experience to go to America and represent the UK,” said Fagee. Joanna Theodoulou, youth participation worker with Brent youth service, said: “It is such a great opportunity to represent the young people of the UK. The ambition and drive which the girls embody shows their determination to succeed.”

With ages ranging from 14 to 19, most of the Scenario troupe will be the youngest participants in what has been described by Britain’s youth as one of the world’s “coolest” events.
