What’s it all about?
International Mountain Day was first celebrated on December 11, 2003 and aims to draw attention to the important roles that mountainous regions play in water and food supply. Each International Mountain Day has a theme. Previous years have focused on freshwater, peace, biodiversity and climate change. This year’s theme is food security.
Classroom ideas
The day can be observed through a variety of subject areas such as geography, citizenship, science, and art and design.
You could have an interactive presentation to introduce pupils to different mountainous regions and explain their functions in the landscape. Have any pupils visited mountainous areas? Ask them to describe their experiences and what they saw. Perhaps a design project on the theme of mountains could be organised. Pupils could build their very own “mountain” to display in class for the rest of the year.
