What’s it all about?

Uincef’s annual Day for Change school fundraising campaign takes place on Friday February 5, 2010, and registration for schools is now open. The Day for Change is now in its 21st year, making it one of the longest-running school fundraising campaigns of its kind.

The event encourages schools and pupils to change something for the day in return for a small donation to support Unicef’s work. In 2010, the money raised will fund Unicef’s Education and Child Survival project in Mozambique, East Africa.

Classroom ideas

Fundraising can help to open pupils’ minds and give them a feel for being global citizens. For a whole-school task, ask every child to make a #163;1 donation when they submit a suggestion of change for your school. Reward the best idea by making it part of a school day. Ideas may include a no-uniform day, or having lessons outside or on the floor instead of at desks. Encourage pupils to get sponsorship to change their journey to or from school. For older pupils, a poster project centered on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child could be organised, with teams designing a poster to represent each right, which can then be displayed as motivational tools while fundraising is taking place. Visit www.unicef.orgcrc for more information.

Many more fundraising ideas can be found on the TES Connect website at www.tes.co.ukday-for-change. There are also case studies that could be used to spark discussion in class.
