(Photograph) - A demonstration by 15,000 teachers, parents, children and governors last weekend urged the Government to find more money for schools in its next spending round. They came from all parts of the country to London for the “day out for education” organised by the National Union of Teachers. The union’s general secretary, Doug McAvoy, led the march which took two hours to travel just 2.5 miles.

The demonstration coincided with the publication of a pamphlet by the right-wing Centre for Policy Studies which claimed that education was not deprived of resources, but merely mismanaged them.

Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, claimed funding methods were so complex that profligacy and deception were widespread. He said that of the Pounds 16 billion provided by Government for schools, more than a quarter was held back by LEAs.
