Congratulations to Iain Smith who has ridden to victory in the quaintly entitled “decanal elections” at Strathclyde University. Smith was re-elected dean (hence decanal) of education by 77 votes to 62 against Rae Condie, reader in educational studies, who we are sure will now go far.

The closeness of the vote was a clear warning to Smith that he must do better, insiders say.

The election was apparently followed closely at the General Teaching Council for Scotland where a routine meeting was spiced up by a commentary relayed from Jordanhill. No doubt the fact that Smith and GTC registrar Matthew MacIver are both from Lewis eased the transmission.
