Senior pupils at Anderson High in Shetland faced a problem in staging a debate on the referendum when the Scottish Office leaflets they had ordered turned up printed in Urdu. Gordon Johnston, principal teacher of modern studies, who had ordered 60 leaflets by telephone, said: “I know our dialect is sometimes hard for southerners to understand, but I didn’t realise my own accent was so impenetrable.”
