Decision day for Lewis schools;In brief

The Western Isles will be asked next Tuesday to end six years of doubt and delay on the merger of primary and secondary schooling in the Lochs area of Lewis, a key plank in the education department's strategy of developing "area schools" to replace run-down village schools.

The education committee last week approved the closure of three primaries and Leurbost two-year secondary after a combined pound;4.6 million school is opened at Leurbost. The full council caused controversy last October by deleting the secondary provision but the education committee has now reinstated it.
