Decline in Latin teaching

Your article on the achievements of the Brooklyn Latin School in the US reads: ” ‘Salve!’ booms Griffiths ... The students yell ‘Salve!’ back.” (“Pioneers of progress in the Big Apple”, Feature, 21 June.) One might expect the headmaster of a school with such a title and remit to know that, when addressing more than one person, the correct form of the imperative is “salvete” - a pretty basic error that hardly inspires confidence.

Neil Brinded, Head of Classics, Colchester Royal Grammar School, Essex.
