‘Deep filing system’ uncovered

It obviously helps to be organised if you are a teacher, but just how ship-shape do you have to be? Time4tea poses the question on the TES online forums this week: “Do you need a touch of OCD to be a good teacher or can a reformed slob make the grade?” Time4tea stresses that she is not being flippant: she recognises that obsessive compulsive disorder is a debilitating health condition, but equally that the amount of paperwork involved in being a teacher has the potential to turn anyone into a ritual filer. Lara_mfl_05 says: “I have colleagues with tidy classrooms and colour-coded filing, and others who operate a “deep filing system” (stays on the desk till needed and then thrown away because it is obsolete or out of date). Both types can be very successful teachers.” The “deep filing system” seems to strike a chord. “My desk resembles a recycling pile,” says Henriette, “but I know which papers are there. I know exactly where a student’s achievement is without resorting to looking it up in my mark book.” GreyHam, however, has cleaned up his act: “After using my bedroom floor as my practice teaching file for my PGCE, I have become a fan of OCD organisation.”
