The London borough of Hackney may not appoint a permanent chair of education until after the local government elections in May. The council has no overall political control and the the parties have failed to agree a nomination.

Pressure to make an appointment has come from the improvement team sent into Hackney following an OFSTED inspection. However, chief executive Tony Elliston said the failure should not result in delays in reaching decisions.

The council has accepted the interim report from the improvement team, but has again rejected the recommendation that the recently-appointed director of education be part of the senior strategy team.
