There has been a sharp drop in the proportion of newly qualified teachers who have obtained teaching posts six months after their final exams, a survey has revealed.

The results, collated by the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers, show that in December 1995, 69.5 per cent of graduates were employed in the classroom, compared to 74.5 in 1994 and 74.9 per cent in 1993. UCET suggests that this might be because schools are watching their budgets.

The survey also records an increase in the proportion of those who completed the training course but decided not to go into teaching.
