Sensational and misleading. There is no other way to describe your report (TESS, April 6) on the election of a new dean of the faculty of education, University of Strathclyde.

To suggest that the change of deanship was brought about by a “rank and file putsch” is mistaken. Ian Smth will succeed Douglas Weir in what has been a good contest after healthy debate as part of the established democratic procedures of the university.

John De Cecco Head of language education; convener of the nominating group for dean, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow
