THE Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association is threatening Argyll and Bute with a ballot on industrial action if it goes ahead with its decimation of promoted posts in secondaries.

Other unions, including the secondary heads, are equally alarmed.

Ahead of a council meeting this coming Monday, the SSTA warned that it was “unacceptable” for promoted staff to apply for what are classed as new posts. “Those staff not successful would be effectively demoted, albeit with conserved salaries. The SSTA will not accept such a situation,” David Eaglesham, the union’s general secretary, said.

* Archie Morton, Argyll and Bute education director, is standing down in August after a shake-up of council departments. A “generic senior manager” will take charge.
