Yolanda Brooks previews some of the top attractions at this month’s design and ICT show in Birmingham.
Students from the University of Central England (UCE) will be joining local schools and teachers to demonstrate different aspects of good Damp;T practice at the Damp;T with ICT Education Show being held at the NEC in Birmingham from November 21 to 23.
The university’s Faculty of Education has a reputation for excellence in the Damp;T primary education field and it is the first time a university has been given free exhibition space at the show. As well as examples of students’ work, the UCE stand will feature interactive displays and teaching resources. Students on the BA (Hons) primary education course will be involved in demonstration sessions with local schools.
On the first day of the exhibition, Chris Perry and a team of Year 4 pupils from Victoria Park Primary School in Sandwell, near Birmingham, will be running demonstrations around the theme of Focus on Food for the show’s visitors. Sandwiches and fruit salad will be on the menu as the group will be using the Sainsbury’s Food Awards as the inspiration for their sessions.
The other primary schools appearing at the show will be Balsall Common Primary School which will be working with textiles and Springdale Junior School which will be looking at construction materials. Students from Haybridge High School and Sixth Form will be providing the secondary demonstration.
Professor Richard Kimbell, the director of the technology education research unit at Goldsmiths College, University of London, will give the keynote lecture and seminars range from primary project ideas and using ICT to textiles technology and a preview of the latest version of ProDESKTOP.
The exhibition is diverse and the wide range and breadth of the exhibitors demonstrates this. Companies and organisations appearing this year range from domestic appliance manufacturer Dyson and the Institution of Electrical Engineers, to the Design Museum and Young Quilters.
