THIS CITY LIFE: Street Children Around The World. Teacher’s book, video, photocards and student guides for PSHE and geography. Leeds DevelopmentEducation Centre, 153 Cardigan Road, Leeds LS6 1LJ. Tel: 0113 2784030. pound;22.50 + pound;5 p+p

The depressing backdrop to this pack is the fact that there are millions of young people who live and work on the streets of major cities in both more and less economically developed countries. This pack focuses on the plight of street children in the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Brazil, India and Kenya, (although Brazil and the Netherlands are not featured in the video).

The materials, written by classroom teachers for teachers, successfully relate the exeriences of these children to those of schoolchildren in the UK. The images on the video and detailed activities in the pack are likely to provoke not only a reaction but a stimulating learning experience, both in PSHE and geography.

The video explores the how and why children leave home for a life on the street, in particular the widespread problems of drug and child abuse. It deals with issues of poverty and inequality, and looks at how children survive living in such squalid conditions.

Finally, there is a more optimistic section on the work of agencies which support street children.
