Unions are bracing themselves for the recommendations of a report that could back devolvement of teachers’ pay and conditions to Wales.

All but one union in Wales, Welsh-medium teaching union UCAC, opposes the move that will sever all educational ties with Westminster. However, speculation is high that the divorce will happen sooner rather than later.

One source said: “Sorting out pay and conditions in Wales is now seen as too much like hard work. It would be easier to send it back over the border.”

The School Teachers Review Body (STRB) is looking at the introduction of flexible pay conditions across England and Wales as part of the remit of its review. That will mean teachers being awarded different salaries across both England and Wales.

Unions fear Wales’s low-wage economy could force down salaries. The report is due out later this month.
