The chief inspector of schools David Bell has been developing marked masochistic leanings of late.

Not content with his painful day job of analysing the stagnation of primary literacy and numeracy results, the man who inspects schools for the Queen has taken to spending his and his family’s free time in the windswept stands of Nene Park, home of Rushden and Diamonds FC, who are fighting for financial survival and to keep football league status in the basement of Coca-Cola league two. Last week, Bell, a Scot and fan of the rather grander Glasgow Rangers, had the privilege of watching the Northamptonshire team plunge towards relegation by losing to a goal scored in the 90th minute.

With a certain grim logic Mr Bell has decided to bring his two masochistic activities together next Tuesday by launching his report about the national literacy and numeracy strategy at the Rushden Diamonds ground.
