Dr Nicholas Tate, chief executive at the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority, has been alarmed to receive a request for help from a team of documentary makers.

Their subject? Near-death experiences.

More bizarre still, the letter from Delancey Productions claims that it was the former permanent secretary at the Department for Education, Sir Tim Lankester, who pointed them in Dr Tate’s direction.
