If your school internet filters are doing their job, there is a fair chance your pupils have never seen one of Canada’s oldest magazines. But soon its archive of Canadian history will be opened up to inquiring minds, after its owners agreed to a name change.

The Beaver started publishing in more innocent times, when the fur trade was thriving and the lumberjacks were wholesome. But a subsequent association of the name with female genitalia means internet filters blocked access to its site for many readers.

Now Canada’s Natural History Society, which publishes the bi-monthly magazine, has decided to rename it Canada’s History.
