As the headlines scream that British schools are replacing rugby with yoga and circus skills, the people who develop the curriculum are on the look-out for the next craze to hit PE.

They should look no further than chess boxing, the ultimate test of intellectual power and physical prowess.

Chess boxing combines, unsurprisingly, the sport of boxing with the game of chess.

Contestants play alternate rounds of each - four minutes of speed chess, then three minutes of boxing, then back to chess, and so on.

They are allowed a one-minute break between rounds to take off, or put on, boxing gloves. The winner is announced when one contestant achieves checkmate, knocks their opponent out, when an opponent’s clock runs out in chess, or the judge decides.

The UK’s first known bout of chess boxing took place in London earlier this month.
