The pupils at Penair Secondary School in Truro, who feature in our profile of school chef John Rankin (page 22), certainly know where their food comes from.
But this is not always the case. A survey published last week by the Home Grown Cereals Authority revealed that one in four teens thinks bacon comes from sheep, rather than pigs. Not only that, but almost a third think oats grow on trees rather than in fields and just under a fifth believe eggs are a vital ingredient in making bread.
Older generations knew “much more” about their food, according to the poll of 3,000 people, which was held to mark Farmhouse Breakfast Week this week.
