Just weeks after council officials in Leicester introduced child-like bollards to calm traffic near a school, police in Bulgaria have come up with another innovative scheme to stop drivers speeding.
Police in Bulgarian capital Sofia announced last week that they plan to offer free salami to drivers who give right of way to pedestrians at marked street crossings.
The initiative is part of a series of measures launched for the new school year to prevent accidents with children and boost pedestrians’ safety. Police statistics show that more than half the victims of road accidents in Sofia are pedestrians, many of them children. Perhaps there is such a thing as a free lunch.
