This summer we visited Hop Farm Country Park in Kent during a schools’ week that focused on life during the 1940s. Children were encouraged to dress in period costume, so we had evacuees, land-army girls, air-raid wardens and more.

Displays were presented by a character in role. As well as listening and completing worksheets, children had the chance to get a feel for the period, with sights and sounds of that time, as well as some hands-on activities.

Rather alarming was some of the substitute food - beetroot tea!
