An affordable new device can turn a whiteboard or a pane of glass into a digital whiteboard that captures handwriting, colour drawings or text for use on a computer. The Mimio uses whiteboard markers in special holders that send infra-red and ultrasound signals to sensors in the device. It is also possible to play back on a PC the screens saved durin a lesson and, with the BoardCast option, record the teacher’s voice as well. The manufacturer, Virtual Ink, believes this facility will appeal to schools that want to put teaching materials on their websites without taking up hours of teachers’ time. Mimio costs pound;349 or pound;518 with the boardCast option.
