Craig Vincent (Letters, TES, July 11) is right - there is inadequate training in classroom management for those beginning teaching.

Here in Liverpool, my colleagues and myself have trained more than 60 schools to adopt the “assertive discipline” approach. Our work has been acknowledged in the current White Paper, Excellence in Schools .

We have been unable to persuade any of the teacher-training institutions in the area to consider incorporating this approach.

Craig Vincent and all the students who succeed him will continue to enter classrooms inadequately trained in this skill, and with little conceptual understanding of the issues.
