The wife of the man charged with advising ministers on classroom discipline has seen the light. “I have worked out what the Government’s policy on schools is,” she told her husband, Sir Alan Steer. He said: “Yes, dear?”

She said: “SHAG: Secondary Heads Are God.” Lady Steer has been in touch with the divine for some time: Sir Alan has been head of Seven Kings high school in Ilford for 20 years.
