MUSIC GCSE has never been so popular at a Coventry senior school - DJ skills are now part of the coursework. The 650-pupil Barr’s Hill School and Community College in Coventry is believed to be the first school in the country to include this option for both its disapplied and GCSE pupils.

Well-known DJ Simon Langdell visits the school on a regular basis, teaching the tricks of his trade to more than 50 students.

“The pupils learn a real appreciation of music just by setting up the system - then they really get to work,” he says. Students produce their own DJ music mix, which will be cut on to a CD for them to keep.

The DJ course began with a music industry training module run by Coventry’s Education and Business Partnership Centres.

Tony Hope, head of music at Barr’s Hill, says: “The DJ course has proved extremely popular.”
