Competition has been hotting up to find the winner of the “World’s fastest exit from a school” record. One participant knew of a “supply teacher that left at morning break, saying she couldn’t cope”. Then, rather spectacularly, someone claimed that a newly qualified teacher backed out before the term started because “they didn’t have the nerve to turn up for the Inset day!”

But our favourite entry is this refreshingly honest correspondent: “I was skint, out of work, just qualified and was offered supply work at a local hellhole of a primary school. I started in January and was told there would be regular work until July. I didn’t go back after lunch.”
