Public trust in politicians, always a sensitive issue, was given a colourful and less than aromatic slant at the Scottish Trades Union Congress in Glasgow last week by Gerry Docherty of the Transport Salaried Staff Association.

On a visit to another country, which must remain nameless in the interests of political correctness, leading legislators were accused of pursuing “kipper policies”. That is, they are “gutless, spineless, two-faced and stink”.

Just as well we live in Scotland. “Works hard, could do better” was the best that Terry Brothersone, of the Association of University Teachers in Aberdeen, could throw at former student Lewis McDonald, now Deputy Lifelong Learning Minister.
