Don’t be deterred by cynics

Teaching is the most rewarding and privileged job on offer. No, I am not a dewy-eyed prospective PGCE applicant like Kirsten Wilson. I began teaching in 1949 and retired 28 years later: I never regretted a moment.

Of course, there are easier ways of earning a bigger penny but none as satisfying.

Naturally, you will meet a few “spoilers”, even among the youngest children, and doubtless experience some worrying moments, but no other job compares with teaching for the glow felt at the end of a good day.

Don’t be deterred by the cynics, Kirsten, you are right in thinking that it is a fantastic job. When I retired, I went on researching into how young children coped with mathematics and gained my PhD - I hope you will feel equally inspired 30 years hence.
