Don't follow the LSC's new leader

The Government is anxious to ensure those who begin courses at FE colleges go on to gain a qualification, but it will not be able to hold up the new chief executive of the LSC as a shining example.

Thirty years ago, when he was a junior reporter on the Grimsby News, Mark Haysom did a block-release course in journalism at Richmond college, Sheffield. But did he pass the National Council for the Training of Journalists proficiency test taken at the end of his apprenticeship? Er, no.

Actually, he went the HE route and, after graduation, did a diploma in journalism.
