Don’t let athletics run out of steam

HAVING just returned from the Norfolk school’s athletic championships, I read with horror and amazement the possibility of there being no English schools athletics championships from 2004, because of lack of funding (TES, June 13).

To see the effort and delight taken in achieving such high standards is a high point of any athletics season. These standards have remained consistent and are diffficult to attain.

These targets add an impetus and drive for thousands of young athletes each year.

It really is perverse that all this could be lost when in schools we are being encouraged to develop gifted and talented strands in all curriculum areas. We really will be failing the gifted and talented athletes if these championships are lost. Perhaps Cadburys could be approached to sponsor this vital educational experience!
