The saga of the principal teachers’ equal pay case has rumbled into their Lordships’ House where notification of the next round in the spat between the Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association and Strathclyde’s successor councils was preceded by the daily ritual of prayers.

The Almighty is unlikely to speed matters up before next summer at the earliest. It could even be 1998 when M’luds get round to the case. By then, both sides will have run up sizeable bills to the advantage of M’Learned Friends. The union is proceeding in this expensive process - no change out of Pounds 100,000 apparently - thanks to the coffers of the Equal Opportunities Commission which pitched in to defend the teachers’ honour. They are all women.

Nothing too much should be read into the selection of the SSTA silk. David Pannick is an eminent QC.
