Out of the mouths of babes: a group of pre-fives in a nursery school in the east end of Glasgow were inspecting the doughbread scone they had just baked under the supervision of their nursery nurse.

“It looks like a hat,” said a girl, displaying commendable imagination, only to be trumped by one of her yong male classmates: “It looks like a shite.”

An impeccable source in the same nursery reports that while foot-and-mouth may not have reached Easterhouse, it is certainly having an impact. All the cows in the children’s farmyard tableau have been placed on their backs with their feet in the air.
