I started teaching in 1972. GCEs ruled, but CSEs, the highest grade of which was the equivalent of a GCE pass, were rapidly approaching. This dual system lasted almost two decades.

Then came that nice Mr Baker who deemed that there should be one examination system fit for all pupils. There followed the birth of the GCSE, which examined all pupils for some two decades.

From September (“September start for state-led IGCSEs”, May 28), it seems that there will be two systems again, one “more rigorous” and one “home grown”.

On entering teaching, I heard that one could expect to see the introduction and jettisoning of initiatives at least twice. I feel cheated! It’s only happened once.
