East Sussex pupils are being offered the chance to see their thoughts about walking to school emblazoned on T-shirts worn by every member of their class.

The shirts will be the prize for the winners of a competition for primary pupils aimed at improving child awareness of road safety. It is also hoped that it will encourage their parents to reflect on the environmental impact of using cars on the school run.

Pupils are being asked to create a catchy slogan to be printed on the backs of the shirts.

There will be five district winners, one each from Rother, Hastings, Wealden, Eastbourne and Lewes, and the overall winner who will receive the Walk to School shield.

Matthew Lock, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for transport and the environment, said: “By taking part in this competition, every child in East Sussex will be a winner, as it will help them to understand dangers on the roads.”

The competition’s deadline is November 13. Only one entry per class is allowed. Schools wanting to take part should first register with schooltravelplans@eastsussex.gov.uk. hw.
