Eating away at the original core;Letter;News and opinion

THE ARTICLE summarising the new national curriculum asked subject teacher associations for their verdict on the new orders (TES, November 26).

The Department for Education and Employment once again edits religious education out of the curriculum (although it has been required for 55 years now, being the original "core subject").

The Curriculum 2000 work in RE offers plenty to help teachers and plenty to consider professionally: an eight-level scale, guidance on learning, special needs, inclusion and a non-statutory RE scheme of work.

My verdict on this material is positive. But I beleive that the DFEE has suppressed it. Mr Blunkett continues to operate a bargepole policy towards RE: he won't touch the subject with one.
